5 Secrets for Creating an Effective Office Space
When you are moving into a new office space, it can be overwhelming and a little scary. How do you know what to do and how to make sure your new space will be effective? Here are the top five secrets that I’ve discovered for creating an effective office space:
1.) Pre-Design – Make a list of your requirements, your needs and your wants. You will require a desk. What kind of desk do you need and what kind of desk do you want. You may need an “L” shaped desk and may want a portion of that to be height adjustable. The height adjustable is a want because it may not be in your budget right away. You may or may not need extra seating or a conference table. A lounge or lunch room area with appliances. Think about storage of files and office supplies. Do you require a stand for your copier/printer? Do you require a cabinet to keep supplies organized? These are essential questions to think about prior to creating, renting, or purchasing a space.
2.) Design around your Company Culture – What does your mission state? Do you want this same mission emanated through you and your employees? It also depends greatly on what type of company you have. It’s important to create a space design based on the needs of the company and the team. Lawyers and doctors typically need private spaces to discuss sensitive information. A marketing company is most likely the opposite. They thrive on creative collaboration. Thinking about the feel of the office is an important design aspect.
3.)
4.) Leave room for growth – You may want to think about your 3-5 year plan and if that would incorporate a little room for expansion in your chosen space. This would be if you plan on hiring employee(s) and need more furniture space, perhaps adding a few walls, a conference/meeting room, etc. Make sure to ask the landlord what this might look like if you plan on remaining in the office space.
5.) Think Tech – Are you going to have phone or video conferencing within your company? Are you going to have employee(s) or partners that work remotely? If so, you may want to think about how this affects the space. Do you want to purchase a conference calling device or a video conference device? Do you need movable furniture to make it easier to use the device? Also, explore different apps and what they might offer you and your business to operate remotely, communicate seamlessly with your office and others on a budget.
These are crucial points that I discuss with every client when beginning a space plan/design. For a company to be successful, the most important thing is to make sure you are productive and effective in your space. By using these secrets, you will create the best plan for your effective office space.
